The Duke of Edinburgh pub and restaurant was the dream of three Englishmen
and one American who wished to build a pub and restaurant in California
with the same atmosphere as the pubs in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
In order to insure that the setting was authentic, a pub designer from
England was brought to California to help with the design. After approval
by Vallco and the City of Cupertino, the plans were sent to England where
the complete interior of the pub was built. Everything inside - the bar,
the ceiling, the carpet, the wallpaper, the lamps, EVERYTHING, was made
in England.
When completed, the pub interior was packed in containers and shipped
to California. After arrival, it was only a few weeks before the Duke
was open for business. With the large population of British and Irish
expatriates in the Bay Area, it didn't take long for the word to get around
that there was an authentic pub in town.
Since opening on Halloween 1983, the Duke has become the local pub for
both expatriates and Californians alike. The atmosphere at the Duke is
the same as you would find in any pub in the British Isles, full of friendly
patrons who come in to talk, play darts, have a pint or two, and eat a
meal. With the help of additional partners, we think we've accomplished
our goal of building an authentic pub in California. We hope you enjoy
it as much as we do.
